With the strong support of the Indian government and the international cooperative efforts, Indian Institute of Technology has rapidly grown into a world's top institutions of science and engineering in a short period of more than half a century. Along with the positive impact of these external factors, it is just undeniable that IIT's own features plays an important role in the promotion as well.This study, starting with the Indian development of the higher education and the evolution of the Indian Institute of Technology, explores the successful practice and experience of the college from the aspects of the college system, teaching pattern, curriculum design and industrial cooperation etc. Based on the related theories, it sums up the features of the school-running, and then provides an analysis of the inadequacy of the Institute, trying to make some reference to China's development of higher education and to inspire it to move forward.This article is divided into seven parts. The first chapter is an introduction which embraces the background of the study, the contents and the methods, fundamental concepts, the relative reviews and the significance. Chapter two is an overview of the Indian Institute of Technology, and a great emphasis has been put on the factors for its being and the current status. Chapter three concerns the IIT's management system, whose characteristic of self-autonomy embodies in the daily operation of the institute, the fulfilling of its functions and the financial management as well. Also, it discusses the composition of funds, whose diversified sources provides the college with enough space for full development, for sufficient funding not only enables IITs to enhance the standard of facilities and equipment for research, but also benefits the long-term development of the institute. In Chapter four, IIT's features about its education are focused on the toughest entrance exams, Spartan-style teaching run through the stringent requirements, diversification of curriculum, the highlight of basic courses and all-round development, and the practicality of curriculum-device. Besides, this chapter concerns the pattern of the collaboration between the college and the industry, which enhances their interaction and achieves the mutual benefits produced by the good relation. The fifth chapter goes into the structure of IIT's faculty, which is so mighty and is composed by the domestic elites, professionals coming from the industry and alien or visiting professors, with whose dedication, IIT's golden brand is built. The extremely significant role played by the international cooperation has been mentioned in chapter five, for this practice brings the institutes adequate funds, advanced equipment and technology, all of which have a profound impact on IITs. Here, the developing process and the factors will be the main points. Chapter seven is the final part of this paper. In accordance with the four features raised and proved in the previous four chapters, the study probes into IIT's successful experience and then points out the problems in its development. Furthermore, combined with the current status of the development of China's higher education, it puts forward some proposals for China as a most important and positive reference.
