As we all know, teaching materials play a vital role in reforming foreign language teaching. Choosing and using the suitable textbook is one of the important factors to complete the teaching contents and achieve the teaching goals. Not only can textbooks guarantee to implement the teaching program, but also it is the main bases for the teachers to organize the teaching activities and the main source for the students to gain their knowledge, skills and learning strategies. Therefore, it is very important for us to evaluate these various textbooks. The textbook evaluation can not only offer reference to the education administration to choose textbooks but also provide suggestions for the compilers to revise textbooks. Moreover, it can help the teachers to adapt or adjust the textbooks in the course of teaching and give teachers teaching guidance and students a great help in their study.New Century Junior English is composed by Shanghai International Studies University and published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. It agrees with the essence of the second national curriculum reform and embodies the latest notion of materials development. With its first experimental edition in September, 2001, it is lack of an overall assessment. This research chooses Bilingual School affiliated to SISU as the objects. It is trying to analyze its textual characters and its data collected from questionnaires and interviews to get a systematic evaluation.This paper consists of 5 parts. Part One serves as an introduction, which focuses on the background information, the objectives, content, significance of the research, and the framework of the thesis as well. Part Two systematically discusses the related theories of textbooks and textbook evaluation. Part Three makes an internal evaluation of the textbook. Part Four focuses on the external evaluation. Part Five analyzes and discusses the problems in use and points out the reasons. Then some advice on textbook amendment and use are proposed.
