To meet challenges of the age of knowledge-based economy, China has successively implemented the Strategy of Developing the Country through Science and Education and the Strategy of Strengthening the Country through Talents. Gradually, with the economic globalization growing, the scientific-technical progress continuous and the international competition fierce, the Chinese government has made the strategic decision of constructing an innovation-oriented country.Due to its distinctive advantages, the research-oriented university, top of the university pyramid, assumes significant mission in constructing an innovation-oriented country. The faculty with high quality is the most important resource for the development of the research-oriented university and is where the key competitive force lies. Therefore, it becomes extremely important to make a correct and scientific evaluation on the comprehensive quality of the teaching staff. It relates to not only their personal improvement and development, but also the progress of the research-oriented university.The performance evaluation on faculty members in the research-oriented university being the subject, this thesis first introduces the research background, expounds the research necessity and significance and retrospects the present situation of the performance evaluation on faculty members home and abroad. The thesis starts with the statements on performance evaluation theory, then analyses the complexity and particularity of the research-oriented university and its faculty members and expounds the characteristics of faculty's performance evaluation. On such a basis and applying the current performance evaluation theories and methods, the thesis discusses the ideas and promotes the detailed system of performance evaluation on faculty members. Lastly, in accordance with the theories learnt at college, years of work experience and cases, the writer tests and expands the performance evaluation system put forward, analyses and concludes the improving direction and methods in the system of performance evaluation on faculty in the research-oriented university by means of case studying.
