Cooperative learning is an effective language learning strategy, which has been widely applied to the English teaching and learning successfully, especially in middle schools. Cooperative learning has been introduced into English language teaching in classrooms for many years .It has changed the traditional English teaching methodology and invigorated new vitality to Language teaching and learning in classroom. However, because of inadequate research of cooperative learning, poor organization, improper operation, the practice of cooperative learning turned out to be a mere formality and didn't achieve the desired results. After a careful analysis of these phenomena, the thesis thinks, to achieve a better cooperative learning , we should not only form cooperative learning groups scientifically, cultivate team members' cooperation skills but also establish a long-term "study group" evaluation mechanism. Reasonable evaluation mechanisms are important ways to improve cooperative learning. On the basis about the study of cooperative theories, we chose students of Grade One and Grade Two from two senior middle Schools in Suzhou as objects of study and carried out a experimental research on cooperative learning in English teaching in middle schools. In the research process, we constructed the cooperative learning patterns and evaluation strategies for English teaching in middle schools and reach the following conclusions: Cooperative learning can effectively improve English teaching by promoting students'cooperative consciousness and cooperation skills and their interest in English learning. Adoption of new methods of portfolio assessment, group-result assessment, cooperation assessment test provoke students'interests and improve their academic records.
