English teaching, especially spoken English in primary schools is attracting more and more attention since the National Educational Committee made the regulation in 2001 that all primary schools should start teaching English at least from Grade Three. Many primary school teachers are trying different methods including games to improve teaching effects and some teachers and researchers have investigated game teaching and have some important findings in this area. Games can help to achieve the objective of the English course that has been specified by the "New Regulation of English Course" i.e. "to allow student to access the English language from various channel and styles, to directly feel how the English language is utilized in practice". Therefore, it proves that: game teaching in primary schools is a good candidate to serve such purpose. In this thesis, a comparative experiment has been conducted in order to show the effects of game teaching. The writer conducted the experiment which was carried out in Grade 4 in Qianjinlu Primary School. A brief questionnaire with 6 questions on pupils' interest, together with the oberservation and the oral test was presented. The result of this study reveals that: using game can improve students' communicative competence and enhance their sense of English language and culture. It is suitable for English teaching in primary schools and is worthy to be promoted.
