Evaluation: Peer Education On Middle School Student's Tuberculosis Control In Chongqing Reservoir Area

Objective: The study is to analyze the necessity, feasibility and popularizing prospect on peer education's implementation on the middle school students'tuberculosis control in Chongqing reservoir areas, through formative, process, result and summative evaluation.Methods: Peer education was used for middle school student's tuberculosis control in Chongqing reservoir areas. Integrated qualitative interview, quantitative questionnaire and frame observation, it was compared with routine school health education and avaiabled health education by studying before, right after and six months after the interventions. Main comparative index were knowledge awareness, attitude correction rate and practice correction rate, etc.Results: (1) Tuberculosis knowledge awareness rate of K County's middle school was 30.76%, average mark was 5.87±3.51 points. Attitude correction rate was 57.26%, average mark 5.73±2.25. Practice correction rate was 35.97%, average mark 2.88±1.51.Students were not familiar with peer education. But leaders, teachers and students of the school showed warmly welcome for tuberculosis health education and strong willingness to human and material resources for peer education.(2) Peer educators implemented peer education activity on tuberculosis control over 60 times. 500 albums, 1000 course schedules, 500 notebooks, 12 calendars, 4 pictures, 140 foldouts and 500 letters for parents with tuberculosis control information were delivered. 67.6% students satisfied with peer educator and the activities their organized.(3) In study right after intervention, knowledge awareness in peer education group increased to 70.44%. School education group increased to 72.85%. Control group was 33.31%. Core information awareness of peer education increased to 80.21%, school education increased to 79.91%. Significant increased were found in three groups. Increase in peer education group and school education group's were significant different from the control group. No awareness difference was found between the peer education group and the school education group. Six months later, awareness of the 3 groups were still higher than that before the intervention. And no statistical decreased were found during the six months.(4) In study right after intervention, attitude correction rate in peer education group increased to 70.41%. School education group increased to 72.96%. Control group was 58.19%. Significant increased were only found in peer education group and school education group. Six months later, attitude correction rate of the 2 groups were still higher than that before the intervention. And no statistical decreased were found during the six months.(5) In study six months after intervention, practice correction rate in peer education group increased to 52%. School education group increased to 54.62%.Conclusion: Health education on tuberculosis in middle school was not enough. Knowledge awareness, attitude and practice correction rate were still low. The Middle school in Chongqing reservoir area can also provide necessary resources for tuberculosis peer education. After intervention, knowledge awareness and attitude correction rate was highly increased in peer education group. Six months later, practice correction rate was highly increased, too. No difference was found between peer education and school education's effect on knowledge awareness and practice improvement, while school education has higher effect on attitude improvement. Peer education has wide popularizing prospect on tuberculosis health education of the middle schools in Chongqing reservoir.
