Primary School English Extending Teaching And Learning

The new English curriculum standard has pointed out that students should acquire the English knowledge and skills and cultivate the comprehensive use of language through learning and practicing. Teachers should add authentic, contemporary and cultural materials to courses so as to create good English learning environment for students. With the aim to help the students apply what they have learned to daily life, teachers should extend time and space for students' English acquisition. It means that teachers should design various language activities, stimulate the students' learning passion, train them to think in English and develop their abilities to communicate in English. This thesis attempts to find a breakthrough in the English teaching reform grounded on the studies of the extensive English teaching and learning method in primary schools.First, the thesis explains the background and significance of the primary school English extensive teaching and learning method and tells the differences between this method and the development-based English curriculum. The primary school English extensive teaching and learning method can be defined as follows: teachers should take into consideration the objectives of English curriculum standard, key points, teaching difficulties and students' characters to set appropriate teaching plans. Usually, it requires students to use independent learning strategies and cooperation to learn higher level course contents in class or out of class. Teachers can design different teaching activities and introduce multiplex evaluations to help the students form right learning habits and studying methods. Adopting the extensive teaching and learning method, students achieve more time and space to acquire English, obtain richer knowledge, develop more suitable learning styles, find higher individual values, realize greater potentials, cultivate better character and enhance the comprehensive use of English language. This paper is in support of psychology theories and language teaching theories and it puts forward eight principles such as suitable principle, practical principle, and the like.Second, the thesis sheds light on the practice of the primary school English extensive teaching and learning method with many vivid cases, concerning with teaching objectives, teaching contents, teaching activities, teaching methods and teaching evaluations. 1. Teaching objectives can be extended from unitary objectives to three-dimensional objectives; they also can be extended from class objectives to unit objectives. 2. Teachers should choose the extensive materials on the base of researching and understanding of the textbooks, including units, topics, sentence patterns, vocabularies, culture and stories. 3. Teaching activities can be extended into extensive homework or extensive out-of-classroom activities. 4. Combining information technology with English teaching and learning, and introducing opening questions can be used as two teaching methods. 5. Study appraisals, time and space, learning methods, and etc should be attached to teaching evaluations.Finally, the thesis suggests teachers strengthen the curriculum awareness, including setting learning targets, emphasizing teaching process, finding appropriate resource, and developing exploitation spirit. Also the paper proposes that teachers should create open environment and extend time and space for students to acquire language so as to stimulate learning enthusiasm and effective teaching.According to the paper, teachers should adopt the extensive teaching and learning method to lead students to participate in listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. The appealing learning materials and authentic teaching environment assist teachers and students to build meaningful communications and encourage students to think in English. Apart from that, the extensive teaching and learning method fosters students' general qualities and language abilities, and increase teachers' teaching efficiency as well.
