With the rapid development of science and technology, the advanced technology of reverse engineering (RE), based on practical sample materials, capturing 3D geometry information of samples with modern 3D digital facility, reconstructing it into CAD surface models and entity models, according to which products are processed, has applied widely to the each realm of manufacturing industry as one of the principal approaches in assimilating and utilizing kinds of advanced technologies. The application of RE can not merely improve the accuracy of design and manufacture, but also shorten the trial period and cut down cost.Armed with the analysis of the vocational demand for CAD/CAM talents and the features of RE technology, the paper takes the advantage of CAD/CAM specialty educational reform in Hunan College of Information, probes into the training models to cultivate skilled talents in enginery higher vocational colleges, explores present problems in CAD/CAM specialty education, proposes a direction of educational reform, namely "centered with RE technology, driven by RE project", following the guidance of international advanced vocational education theories and confirmed by the Specialty Construction Committee. The reform is to firstly decompose the projects of RE in industrial design process into necessary tasks, to describe the contents of each task as well, then to figure out the definite intension and essential skills of each task, so as to set the training objective of the specialty, secondly, to analyze the essential skills, and to find out and set the corresponding courses and vital qualities, so as to set the curriculum trinity of knowledge, competence and quality. In order to stress the working situation analysis, diverse teaching models such as field teaching, case teaching, project teaching, discussion and inquiry are applied to fulfill the teaching purposes and training objectives.This bran-new education system can eliminate the series of malpractices in present higher vocational education, improve teaching quality, speed up the training and reservation of senior skilled talents in our nation, and guarantee personnel for the faster and better development of our national economy.
