Life Meaning Of Adults' And Its' Influence On Coping Style

The present study focuses on life meaning, increasingly regarded as an import psychological variable to predict life satisfaction, to promote well-being and to protect individuals from negative outcomes. Using literature analysis and questionnaire survey, we tested and revised the Meaningful Life Measure. In Study 1, EFA and CFA were used to validate a five-component construction of life meaning. Study 2 used the independent sample T test and ANOVA to analyze the difference of demographic variables in the dimensions of life meaning among adults. Correlation analysis and path analysis were used in Study 3 to explore the relationship between the adults' life meaning and coping style. And it was also discussed if the life meaning had significant influence on coping style. The conclusions were drawn as following:First, for Chinese adults, Meaningful Life Measure is comprised of five dimensions, labeled enthusiasm, accomplishment, philosophy, purpose, and value.Second, discussion about the demographical variables, it was found that the demographic variables had some significant effects on the different dimensions of life meaning of adults, included time of life, sex, occupation, job position, marital status, location of families and self-report state of health.There are significant correlations between all dimensions of life meaning and active coping style and significant correlations between accomplishment and passive coping style. Accomplishment and philosophy are the predictors of active coping style, and the dimensions of accomplishment, philosophy, and purpose are the predictors of passive coping style.Current limitations and future research orientation were also discussed at the end of the master's thesis.
