With the rapid development of science and technology,the basic education reform of China is undertaking more indeeply and comprehensively. It has become a basic requirement of the 21st century English teachers that improves the English teaching qualities and trains qualified personnel in English. The English teachers in rural areas are one of the most important factors which influence the leve of English teaching .Nowdays the English teachers in rural areas have some problems ,such as the low level of some English teachers'knowledge quality, teaching skills and the self-development consciousness.This situation restricts the development of the English teaching level in rural and lags behind the new curriculum reform'requirements. English teachers in rural areas can't adapt the reform. Teachers'self-development should base on the awareness, voluntary. This study makes a simple exploration on the subject of English teachers'self- development in rural junior middle school by the combination of theory and demonstration.Firstly, the paper interprets the concept's difference between the teachers'self-development and professional development. Then,it interprets five dimensions of English teachers'self-development that are the English teachers'basic knowledge and skills, teaching faith, educational scientific research ability, consciousness of self-development and professional qualities .Secondly,taking the rural middle school of East Henan province as a sample. According to the survey, English teachers have structural problems on the contingent.There are some problems on teaching,such as the teaching concept is outdate, teaching method is single, professional skill is low; there are some problems in some teachers'self-development,such as the professional identity is not high, the sense of self-development is weak, development mean is single and so on. Thirdly, the paper analysis the effects on English teachers'self-development both the personal elements and environmental factors.On personal aspects, English teachers lack the pursuit to the career, professional development goals, knowledge capital, professional exploration sense and research capacity; On environmental factors,there are three aspects which are family, school and society.Finally,this paper proposes four stratagies of self-development according to the situation of rural middle school in eastern Henan province. They are the reflective teaching improves English teachers'skills, participating in school-based training improves English teachers'self-develoment consciousness and English teachers should do some research to improve their study abilities . At the same time the middle school should create a good environment for English teachers'self-development.This study has a certain theoretical and practical significance which improves self-development capacity, the professional development and English teaching skills of English teachers in rural middle schools .
