English teaching has been a hot topic for many years. The aim of learning English is to get students know how to use one language and cultivate their communicative competence. English practice can be usually carried out in classroom. However, influenced by test-oriented education system, many teachers still input some knowledge to students without thinking of their interests and competences about English. So students become negative listeners and teachers become authorities. The phenomenon of deaf-dumb learners has been appeared for a long time.Facing the situation, interaction is promoted. In interactive classroom, teachers can not dominate questions and answers, but encourages students to answer questions. The questions should be offered by different levels according to students abilities. Teacher s role is changed from an authority to a controller, an assessor, an organizer, a prompter, a participant, a resource-provider and a facilitator. Interaction is the important method for using target language. Through the interaction, students participate in the activities of classrooms. Students participation enhances their motivation of studying as well as lets teacher know students need.Chinese and western researchers try to find out the elements of impacting on and boosting interaction tried to make students learn English better. They pay attention to students learning motivation and the readjustment of students and teachers role, the same as the quality of interaction. However, the types and contents of teacher-student interaction are not explained enough by them. This paper begins with the types of teacher-student interaction. It analyzes the proportions of different types of teacher-student interaction by the methods of transcription and questionnaires. The thesis classifies the contents of teacher-student interaction and investigates the environment of English classroom and the behaviors of teachers and students. And major findings are followed: the types of teacher-student interaction are T-S, T-Ss, T-G and S-T interaction. Teachers are inclined to talk with the whole class. The interaction between a teacher and students almost brought up by the teacher rather than students. Teachers pay much attention to input instead of output. There are three parts of contents of teacher-student interaction: reading, repetition and asking and answering questions. Most students and teachers are neither active nor non-active. Hence, the quality of teacher-student interaction is not high. Finally, several suggestions can be promoted: in order to improve the quality of teacher-student interaction, it is necessary to activate teachers and students motivations. Various interactive forms should be used in class. Then, students sense of responsibility can be raised. As a result, teaching efficiency and learning competency will be developed.
