ShiTao is the particular concept of our education history. From the investigation of its unity of history and logic, abstract and concrete, it can be drawn: ShiTao mainly means being a teacher, respecting teachers and seeking guidance from the teacher. It embodies vivid in the disciple. Pre-qin Confucian has had complete cognition and practice for this. ShiTao and Confucianism with its development have inherent consistency. ShiTao has a long history of accumulation. The Shun school was the beginning, which performed both maintenance and teaching. Teachers were the old, who taught Li based on filial piety. Xiang means mastering Li and practicing it. When came to Xia and Shang, maintenance and teaching began to implement the ritual of begging words, which emphasized teachers' moral conduct. The dogma of teaching and learning has been established, which was the historical motive of the development of ShiTao. Western Zhou was good at absorption and creation, the culture and education of which were prosperous. So its mechanism of education government was excellent, regarding the officer as the teacher instead of the old. The Li of respecting teachers was diverse. For instance, imperial school entertaining greatest old teacher, the simplicity of sacrifice, enshrining food, and so on, making clear for respecting teachers and Tao.With the arrival of the spring and autumn period, Li and Yue were damaged. Confucius restored the ancient and wrote classics, initiating Confucianism which the gentleman is exemplar. And then, he established private school, providing teaching without discrimination. To his opinion, being a truly teacher has to learn with indefatigable zeal and be tireless in teaching others. Disciples respecting the teacher had particular Li, for instance, affording gifts when first time meeting, insisting attendance, doing heart bereavement, and so on. Honesty is the base. Confucius encouraged learning by clearly demarcating habit and nature, learning and politics. Disciples seeking guidance from the teacher need to be skillful of asking. Taking on ShiTao completely, the emotion of the teacher and disciple became strong. After Confucius, both Mencius and Xunzi set Confucius as their exemplar. Mencius claimed benevolence and good nature, so he opened up a new bourn of ShiTao, such as teachers everywhere, knocking yourselves heart honestly and falling into the inebriation of teaching. Metaphysics is the understanding way. On the contrary, Xunzi emphasized the criteria of Li and nature improved, so he especially asserted respecting teachers and set them as one of the bases of Li. Meanwhile, he especially called for accumulating learning, so he encouraged disciples to learn from beginning to the end.Learning with indefatigable zeal is intelligent, while being tireless in teaching others is benevolent. Both intelligent and benevolent are sage, which is the mean extreme of pre-qin Confucian ShiTao. Confucius firstly expounded and conducted it, who was also the exemplar of truly teacher. Both Mencius and Xunzi imitated and developed it. So it says"there is a mean extreme, everything will inevitably come into it."Additionally, pre-qin confucian ShiTao is the base."The establishment of base is the born of Tao", so although the Confucian ShiTao present different characteristic during different periods, they take the inheriting and developing pre-qin Confucian ShiTao as their great duty.
