Yulin Wei and Yunchuan Wei were built up in1393and moved to govern the Northern Zhili (northern provinces) in1342. Yulin Wei moved to govern Ding Zhou and returned to its original governed province in1452. Yunchuan Wei moved to govern Xiong County and returned to its original governed province in1425. From then on, the two military offices have always been under the governance of Xing Du Si (the immigration office) of Shanxi Province in the Ming Dynasty.The thesis makes research mainly on The Document of Yulin Wei and The Document of Yunchuan Wei.Chapter One is mainly about the introduction of the two documents and the mistakes and errors in them. In the process of entering the documents into computer, the author finds that owing to some inevitable reasons there are many mistakes and errors in the revised edition of the two documents in1570, so in this chapter these mistakes and errors are classified into different types and detailed illustration are made.Chapter Two concerns about the history of the two offices and on this basis the author combines the two documents with the local chronicles to makes a comparative study of the official settings, constitution of the military officers and their origins. Firstly, the similarities and differences are compared in the two documents and the local chronicles. Then, the author compares the native places of the military officers, and finally the origin of the military officers are concluded.Chapter Three studies mainly the inheritance of the military officers and the offerings and retirements priority given to them. Through analyzing of the documents, the author concludes the basic rules of their inheritance, the proportion of trueborn and unfathered successors, their retiring age, the reason of their death and their priority of offerings and retirements.Chapter Four makes an analysis on the criminals of the military officers. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, is very tolerant to their criminals and the penalities on them will be analyzed in this part.Chapter Five is mainly about the promotion of the military officers. Usually the military officers make their entry into office through the competition of military skills, and several situations of dismissing of competition and winning are introduced in this part. Another focus in this chapter is their promotion channels. Apart from these two parts, expedition trails and defending situation are also concluded in this chapter when the author combines the local chronicles.The research significance of the two documents are summarized in the conclusion.
