At22:40, May14th,2012, A Bite of China (Hereinafter referred to as Bite), a documentarydepicting various gourmet items, was broadcast in program Fascinating Document on CCTV-1.Once came out, the series quickly gained high ratings and became a hot topic in oursociety.With the “pan-entertainment” phenomenon overwhelming in China, as a gourmetdocumentary, Bite can talent showing itself from the complexities of TV program.Its success isdefinitely no accident. The documentary carries the five thousand years of Chinese history andculture and embodies the philosophy of life and rules of conduct from generation to generation.Being a gourmet documentary, Bite is, as a matter of fact, talking about people, history, cultureand philosophy. Being loaded with the grand Chinese culture, it inevitably becomes asuccessful documentary. Therefore, this thesis will study Bite from cultural context, narrativetactics, language styles, design concepts, cultural connotations and so on, trying to reveal itsfactors of success and provide inspirations for the development of gourmet documentaries andeven all documentaries in China.This thesis mainly analyzes Bite from the following aspects.First of all, the cultural context of Bite is analyzed, and the author discussed thefragmented context, aesthetic evolution, audience demands and the new media. Meanwhile, it issystematically expounded that Bite aired at the time when the documentary channel of CentralTV premiered and the “Fascinating Documentary” Program of CCTV-1was launched.Secondly, the author will study the narrative system of Bite, including the narrativestrategies, the theme, the unique structures, the diversified perspectives and the spirit-touchingnarrations, which make the narration full of tension.Thirdly, the author analyzes Bite from the arrangements of sound and picture, which arethe basic elements of images. The picture elements are mainly analyzed from a macroperspective of gourmet search and a micro perspective of people’s presentation of food, both ofwhich, together with the fabulous scenary, add radiance and charm to the beauty of theimage.And the form of the image is studied from the picture composition, presentation of lightand shadows, arrangements of colors, frame rate changes, and artful perspectives. Meanwhile,the sound processing brings about a sense of reality with the water-flowing music throughoutthe film.As for the combination of sound and picture, expressive montages and metaphoricalmontages are employed.Fourthly, the author focuses on the emotional connotations of Bite and demonstrate thehuman concern, country complex, cultural exchange and cultural integration.Finally, the author discusses the demerits of Bite as well as the thesis itself, and points out suggestions for the development of Chinese documentaries in the hope that it will providereferences for documentary workers.
