A Comprehensive Study On The Provincial Word

Xu Shen in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220AD) wrote Shuowenjiezi and thebook for the first time put forward and summarized the theory of “leaving out soundsymbols”, put into practice of concrete analysis of the structure of326Chinesecharacters of leaving out sound symbols. With the later antient Chinese charactermaterials unearthed continuously, a hot trend of the text research of Chinesecharacters of leaving out sound symbols was risen in the academic circle of ChinesePhilology. In recent years, the structure and meaning of Chinese characters of leavingout sound symbols was analyzied by many scholars and formed different views, butlack of systematic and comprehensive. Especially, the research of the rules andreasons presented on the phenomenon of “leaving out sound symbols” isinadequate. In view of this, based on three aspects of sound、structure andmeaning, the paper makes a comprehensive and system research on Chinesecharacters of leaving out sound symbols by the methods of the combination ofhistorical comparison and synchronic study and the combination of examplereasoning and description analysis,then sums up several rules on Xu Shen “leavingout sound symbols”, and further demonstrates the Chinese character parallelism rulein order to provide avaluable new materials for the research of “leaving out soundsymbols” in the academic circle of Chinese Philology.The paper is divided into five parts.The introduction part expounds its research status on the basis of definingChinese characters of leaving out sound symbols and research methods and theselected topic significance on the paper, and makes a brief introduction to theChinese character parallelism rule. The first chapter takes15Chinese characters ofleaving out sound symbols with traditional Chinese characters (including variantscript, seal script, ancient writings) in Shuowenjiezi as a breakthrough point, andmakes diachronic comparison analysis of themselves, and then makes synchronicstudy of others related them, to prove the rationality of Xu Shen’s theory of “leavingout sound symbols” and to demonstrate the objectivity of Chinese character parallelism rule. On the basis of the previous chapter,the second chapter introducesthe concept of “generalized Chinese characters of leaving out sound symbols” anddefines it, and then settles and expounds37groups147generalized characters inShuowenjiezi. The third chapter studys all independent unit characters exceptgeneralized Chinese characters of leaving out sound symbols. This paper unscrambles179unit characters,including eight variants. Due to the large number and limitedreference information,it’s hard to expound one by one, only to relate and analyze“家”、“汨”two characters, and to put forward my views and opinions. Theconclusion summarizes some rules presented by the phenomenon of “leaving outsound symbols”,including the rule of sound and meaning, the generalized rule, therule of dividing cognate words, sound symbols instead of origina characters, theChinese character parallelism rule, and makes a thorough inquiry on their reasons.
