With more and more foreign students come to study in China, the education of overseas students in Yangzhou University has been steadily developing. When the students contact and communicate with the new language and culture, some adjustments have to be confronted. And this is "culture shock" mentioned in the cross-cultural adaptation theory. This paper studies about cross-cultural adaptation of the international students of Yangzhou University in2012. There are three areas:psychology, social life and learning. The survey is mainly about the issues might occur, and the reasons for the problem, and make suggestions for helping the international students adapt to the new life. The research method is questionnaire survey, supplemented by individual interviews in order to get more information.In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this research is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the basic information of the object under investigation and their overall situation of cross-cultural adaptation. Findings:most of78participants in the survey are form neighbor countries. The majority of international students are Asian and African nationalities, the minority of the students are European and American nationalities; male students are more than female students; their ages are mainly between the twenties and thirties; the time of staying in China is short, non-degree-oriented language learning; the knowledge of institutions in China is limited, Chinese level is generally not high. Generally speaking, the psychological adaptation belongs to a good level, the social adaptation and the learning adaptation are in moderate level.The second chapter focuses on specific issues in cross-cultural psychological adaptation, social life adaptation and learning adaptation. The main problem in psychological aspects is minor somatic disorders and depressive; the problem in social adaptation are:difficult to understand the local accent, difficult to use public toilets, difficult to see the problem from the perspective of the Chinese people, do not know how to deal with unhappy people and unsatisfied services, difficult to live in a foreign country independently; the main difficulties in learning adaptation are use the library, participate in extracurricular activities, make friends with Chinese students and understand the content of pro-education. The third chapter analyzes the reasons for specific issues and elated factors. Students’ gender, age, time in China, overseas experience and understanding of China will affect their individual degree of cross-culture adaptation.The main idea of chapter four is making suggestions for helping international student to adapt to the new environment. There are three approaches, the students should strive to improve their ability of cross-cultural adaptation; the school administrators also need to improve the management; foreign language teachers need to maintain communicate with students, optimize teaching methods, strengthen cultural infiltration.
