Film, as a form of culture and cultural phenomenon, is the product of cultural ecology. At the same time, the development of film has been enriching and rewriting the cultural ecology in its own way. Throughout the development of Chinese film in recent years, the appearances of films with small and medium-sized cost have become beautiful sceneries in China. More and more films like this are seen in cinema and welcomed by the audience, winning the double win of box office and word of mouth. But, from the aspect of overall and long-term development of the movie industry, the small and medium-sized cost films have many problems in function orientation, value orientation and development model etc, which need attention. From the visual Angle of cultural ecology, this paper aims at the analysis of these problems to explore solutions.The introduction part mainly contains the value and significance of the selected topic, literature review, research methods and three aspects of overall thought.The first chapter covers the reason why the small and medium-sized cost films exist. It mainly discusses the existence of small and medium-sized cost film’s value and significance in the entire film culture ecology. After the tough period of the 1990 s, Chinese films go o on a path to commercialization at the beginning of the new century beginning. Domestic commercial blockbuster become the mainstream of Chinese films. In this context, the emergence of small and medium-sized cost film break the pattern of commercial blockbuster’s control of the whole country, offering more possibilities for Chinese film and enriching ecological film culture. This is of great significance for the long-term healthy development of Chinese film.The second chapter deals with the swinging between humanity and commercial. One of the important value of small and medium-sized cost film is its humanity. It’s the key element for small and medium-sized cost films to win in wrestling with commercial blockbuster. Throughout the hit films in recent years, however, it can be found that humanity’s loss and emphasis of commercial are becoming the important characteristics of small and medium-sized cost film. Problems like market-orientation, excessive cater to the market, entertainment and the pursuit commercial profit etc, lead to its misplacement, and the gradual weakening of its humanity, exploratory, pioneering function.The third chapter talks about the crisis and way-out of domestic small and medium-sized cost film. The concept of small and medium-sized cost film is not only sense of naming for investment scale, but also is a positioning of attribute and category. At present, although small and medium-sized cost film often create miracles at the box office, but the profound crisis lurks behind. Only by freeing from the pursuit of dislocation, returning to itself, drawing lessons from foreign experience, increasing the intensity of support, establishing a proprietary theaters can small and medium-sized cost film break the crisis and return to the healthy and benign development track.
