This paper studies the animation industry, which is one of the pillar cultural industries, to discuss problems occurred in its development process in China as well as improvement measures. One problem in this industry concerns the industrialization of animation. This paper analyzes defects in the vertical animation industry chain from the perspective of cultural industry chain. The other issue is about the development mode, which refers to industrial extension and derivative development, i.e. the development of "channel industry ", in nature.This paper conducted an analysis on the backgrounds, industrial patterns, and core competences of foreign animation industries, including market-oriented industries in U.S.A and Japan, and government-guided industry in South Korea. In particular, actions taken by the South Korean government may enlighten the Chinese animation industry mainly supported by government at the present stage.In the study of Michael Porter’s Diamond Model within the context of the Chinese animation industry, production factors, demands, the channel industry, opportunities and government interventions are analyzed and discussed. It is suggested that more investments should be made in mobile animation in order to further develop the whole animation industry.
