Painting theme is an indispensable part and any form, any style of painting must have an objective thing as a carrier. Theme is the starting point of art and is the support of artist thinking,but it is also important to rely on the uniqueness of the artist’s performance. Jan Van Eyck and Rembrandt’s theme will highlight the choice between the two different outlook on life and artistic pursuits. Jan Van Eyck is one of the main representatives of the fifteenth century Netherlandish painting. He not only laid the foundation for the Renaissance of the Netherlands,but also is the inventor of European painting. It is well known that his realistic depiction of the fine and subtle lighting performance on his works.Rembrandt is known as one of Europe’s greatest 17th-century painter, but also the greatest painter in the history of Dutch. His life has ups and downs, adhering to realism artistic creation road, and has made great important contribution for the European realist art development. Jan Van Eyck and Rembrandt both are the great Dutch painter, but separated by more than two centuries. Two masters not only have the existence of "the same and different" in painting styles, techniques, etc., but painting subjects have many of the same choices and differences. This article select from the perspective of the subject, by analyzing Jan Van Eyck and Rembrandt, two very influential Dutch painter, painting with different phenomena in the choice of subject and explore the underlying causes of them.This paper is divided into four chapters, and the first chapter is an introduction. The first chapter deals with the definition of the subject and themes with the evolution of social development, as well as the relationship between the subject and the creation of dialectical analysis. The first chapter is divided by two parts, and the first part, respectively,describe in the range of subject by the two masterpieces. The second part analyze the similarities and differences of the chosen subjects between two masters. The second chapter explore the reasons for similarities and differences. The third chapter discuss Van Eyck and Rembrandt’s chosen subject matter of enlightenment "similar and difference". Pointed out that changes in the social and cultural connotation of the West, is the different understanding of different times to the life and the nature of the present,from another angle shows the different concerns of Western different times.In this paper, literature reference method, comprehensive analysis, historical comparison,case analysis, research and other research methods are used.
