Interpretation Of "Materiality" And "Non - Materiality" In Contemporary Yangzhou

Being one of the excellent representatives for China jade curving arts, Yangzhou Jade Carving and its processing craftsmanship kept the traditional local culture characteristic of Yangzhou during inheriting in thousands years. Yangzhou Jade Carving craftwork is always known as "Yangzhou Arts and Crafts", down the ages there’s already such a reputation with "To collect subcelestial jades, processing with Yangzhou Arts and Crafts."This article aims to mainly study the characteristics and significances for "Materiality" and "Non-materiality" with Yangzhou Jade Carving.As one of the national intangible cultural heritage in first batch, Yangzhou Jade Carving has such two-tier characteristics with "Materiality" and "Non-materiality". On its manifestation form, Yangzhou Jade Carving shall be the "Material", with characteristic in "Materiality", which to be shown in those aspects such as theme, shape, color, law and social implication etc. But the process & behavior for creating the objects are just intangible existences, with that so called characteristic of "Non-materiality", which to be exactly shown as methods, procedures and ideas used for creating the objects. The above aspects in two categories complement each other and cannot be divided apart from each other, constitute entire contents of Yangzhou Jade carving.With the starting point in characteristics of the "Materiality" and "Non-materiality" with Yangzhou Jade Carving, through such view in artistry and cultural anthropology, this article aims to focusing on solutions for following questions, they are:(1) What is the characteristic of "Materiality" with contemporary Yangzhou Jade Carving, and which kind of groups with such ideas for creating-objects behind it? (2) What are the craftwork, inheriting and sales mode for Yangzhou Jade Carving? During this ear of constant changes in both society and technology, how can we deal with the evolution of Yangzhou Jade Carving? (3) Under market economy and in case of continuous emergence that the tougher culture overwhelming vulnerable cultures, how can we keep its own industrial features during the evolution of Yangzhou Jade carving? And how can we continue the brilliant achievement that "To collect subcelestial jades, processing with Yangzhou Arts and Crafts"?Based on those datum obtained through participative field investigation, on one hand, from the aspects of "Materiality" text with Yangzhou Jade Carving, this article makes explanation for Yangzhou Jade Carving itself as the "objects", to analysis contemporary carving works and then derive the intangible creating-objects thought among them; on the other hand, from the aspects of "Non-materiality" text with Yangzhou Jade Carving, based on process and behavior of craftsmen creating objects to make analysis, this article then describe and analyze the craftwork and its significance, connotation and genes, inheriting, market and other issues of Yangzhou Jade Carving, aim to find structure of social relations.Through analysis this article gives conclusion as following:the emergence and development of Yangzhou Jade Carving must be synchronized with the environment, the contemporary works of Yangzhou Jade Carving have formed such characteristics that taking Hetian Jades as primary material, rich in shape and theme, varied in style of "Materiality". On the other side, the characteristic of "Non-materiality" with Yangzhou Jade Carving has got greater variation contemporarily; the development of technology has impacted such traditional craftwork in certain grade. What the characteristics of "Materiality" and "Non-materiality" with Yangzhou Jade Carving are aiming to is that the social utilitarianism, thus its evolution shall be unavoidable, but between such a case and the emphasized "authenticity" principles by intangible cultural heritage there really have irreconcilable contradictions. For its industry development, currently Yangzhou Jade carving has the advantage in craftwork, brand and talent; it’s also such position irreplaceable. However it shall face to those defects as rising cost, inadequate innovation, poor talent cultivating, and smaller industrial scale at the same time. Only upon on strengthening strategy support, continuing to reform and innovate, improving the talent cultivation quality, insisting on the road to brand and great pieces, it shall promote the industry of Yangzhou Jade Carving for healthy development accordingly, then to continue the brilliant achievement that "To collect subcelestial jades, processing with Yangzhou Arts and Crafts"...
