The foot organ is one of the organs that frequently used by humans, and the foot action is universal and common. This article chooses foot monosyllabic verbs as a typical study. And the article studies foot monosyllabic verbs systematically from the semantic and pragmatic features. The preface introduces the reason and significance that we choose foot monosyllabic verbs as a typical study. And it introduces the method and the source of corpus of study on foot monosyllabic verbs. Lastly, the thesis confirms the 27 foot monosyllabic verbs as the scope of the study. The chapter one reviews the research and the work on foot monosyllabic verbs. It mainly studies from definition, classification, semantics, sentence, metaphor and metonymy of foot verbs. The thesis can find breakthrough based on this research status. The chapter two analyses the semantic feature of foot monosyllabic verbs. Firstly, summarize the semantic category of foot verb as [+autonomy], [+the situation of using tools], [+state alteration], [+displacement] and [+fixation] in accordance with the corpus and sentence frames and heads. Secondly, foot monosyllabic verbs are divided into certain minor sorts that every sort of verbs is similar, and described from the point of the situation of using tools, the action way, result and object to make a difference using the semantic properties as little as possible and generalize the semantic feature of each member.Lastly, according to Zhu Xiaoya’s description of sentence model, it summarizes six basic semantic structural patterns of sentences, and analyses the choice of each foot verb for basic sentence model. Every foot verb has different basic sentence model due to different characteristics. The chapter three studies the pragmatic features of foot monosyllabic verbs. First of all, the rhetoric feature is analyzed. Foot verbs mainly describe the action, and are predicates in a sentence, so they can be used as anthropomorphic and exaggerated expression. Secondly, foot monosyllabic verbs are out of balance in the distribution of style. They are mainly used in the literary style, while used rarely in the political comment style, scientific and technical style and documental style. Lastly, foot monosyllabic verbs have their own characteristics of metaphor. Their metaphor is closely related to their action orientation. In the course of making metaphor, their original semantic feature can change or reduce to remaining the orientation feature.
