Mannerheim, assigned by the Russian General Staff, went to China for expedition in 1906-1908,then left many valuable historical materials.Based on the materials, the thesis studies the problems about Mannerheim’s expedition in the Western Regions. During the expedition in Xinjiang for one year, Mannerheim mainly focused on collecting the military intelligence and geographic information. Parted ways with Paul Pelliot(伯希å'Œ), unauthorized changed expedition route and even passing by the Mogao Caves are both closely related with the mission which aims to gather military intelligence for Russia. By the way, the materials of Mannerheim would be useful to make the preliminary analysis on the implementation of the New Deal of Late Qing Dynasty in Xinjiang and other issues.Based on the Dunhuang city map drawn by Mannerheim and other documents. The thesis discusses some historical geography questions about Dunhuang city, such as the construction process of the City, ramparts shape, the layout and the scale, the traffic situation. What’s more, the thesis has done a serious study on issues of Mannerheim’s entourages and other problems which was less concerned by others in the past. The thesis clarifies the complex interpersonal relationships in his diary preliminarily. The entourages of Ma Dahan include Cossacks, translation, cooks, guide, coachman of motorcade and yayi. From the wages of entourages paid by Mannerheim, the thesis analyses the economic level and area difference in Northwest Region of late Qing Dynasty:the economic level of northern Xinjiang higher than the southern significantly, while the YiLi’s economic level was the highest.
