With the further promotion of Chinese around the world, more and more foreign students come to China to learn Chinese. What they have learned are not only language skills, but also the culture behind the language in that language and culture are inseparable and they are an organic whole. Meanwhile, Chinese contains a strong cultural connotation. Language and culture depend on each other, language is the carrier of culture, and culture talks through language.For foreign students, learning language skills is not enough, they have to develop their abilities from the perspective of the breadth and depth of culture.Therefore, except for the courses of traditional language skills, many colleges have opened various cultural courses, including Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature. As a cultural elective course opened for foreign students earlier, the teaching of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature has developed rapidly in recent years. Its main performances are: the course is opened in more and more colleges and universities; The course is enrolled by more and more students. What’s more, this course takes in many outstanding teachers who are majored in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature. The teaching team is growing and the teaching materials of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature changes from the ones used by Chinese students to the specialized ones developed only for foreign students.However, there hasn’t been a mature system which can deal with a series of problems,such as the nature of the course, curriculum setting, teaching method and mode. It results in that the practical teaching is relatively profligate: the teachers choose the teaching contents and methods according to their own experiences; and the studentsinterpret modern and contemporary literature according to their own interests. Factors like imperfect related systems and the lack of in-depth researches of this course limit the realization of the significance of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature.In terms of the present situation of the teaching of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature in Yunnan Normal University, the thesis analyzes the students’ learning and the teachers’ teaching methods through literature research method,questionnaire method and interview, mainly explores the necessity and feasibility of the course of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature in foreign students’ learning process, from the perspectives of curriculum setting, teaching material and teaching method of the course of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature,aiming at providing some teaching strategies and suggestions. I hope that this thesis can be helpful to the teaching of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature.
