A Comparative Study Of Chinese And English Kinship Terms And Teaching Methods Of Teaching Chinese As A Foreign Language

People usually employ different addressing terms to conduct various kinds of communication activities. The frequently used addressing terms are thus very important and make the must-know words for daily communications and interactions. For foreign students learning Chinese, the learning and mastery of the Chinese addressing terms have long been a tricky difficulty in the process of acquiring Chinese vocabulary due to the subtlety, complicatedness, variations and explicit referents of the addressing terms. Based on the existing literature on addressing terms, this thesis, having its research scope focused on the New HSK(Level1-6) Examination Guidelines, delves into the situation of native speakers of English learning and using Chinese language from the perspectives of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(TCSL). It summarizes and categorizes the kinship addressing terms included in the Guidelines and analyzes the use of such terms in both the English and Chinese languages from the semantic, pragmatic and cultural connotation perspectives. Furthermore, it discusses the principles and methods in teaching these terms to native speakers of English learning Chinese, proposing certain specific approaches in teaching.
