The bamboo slips discovered in the ancient tomb of Qin Dynasty in Shuihudi in1975 is a milestone in the history of archaeology. It was written in Qin Dynasty, and the characters were between seal character and official script. In the development history of Chinese characters, it served as a link between past and future. Through the study of the interchangeable characters in SHUI, we can not only find out the developing rules of Chinese characters, but also acquire an important reference to the research of the history of Chinese phonology and Chinese language.Systemic investigations of the interchangeable characters in SHUI are done in this paper using the book that is called Bamboo Slips of Shuihudi’s Tomb from Qin Dynasty(or SHUI) and published by Cultural Relics Publishing House in 1990. All the thesis can be divided into six parts:the first part is introduction and in this part we mainly introduce the chief content of SHUI, the status, significance and method of study f SHUI,and the discrimination between the interchangeable characters, the ancient-modern characters and the variant forms of characters. The second part mainly describe the definition and the judgment standard of the interchangeable characters which include character pronunciation, character meaning and documentary evidence. In the third part, detailed statistics and analysis of the interchangeable characters are done in the thesis. Then we categorize them according to the corresponding relationship, glyph relationship and phonological relationship of the borrowed character and the original character. In the fourth part, the ancient phonetic phenomena both initials and finals shown in the interchangeable characters are studied to verify some previous conclusions. In the fifth chapter, we compare the interchangeable characters in SHUI with that in other documents according to two aspects of horizontal and vertical, in order to observe the development trend of the interchangeable characters. In the sixth chapter, we list some typical examples to analyze the especial interchangeable characters in SHUI. In the end, we sum up the full text and point out the deficiencies of this paper.
