The color words play an important role in modern Chinese. First of all, the color words are numerous. In addition to the basic color words, and composite color words, such as mustard yellow, peacock blue, etc. Such words are presented by a systematic way. Second, the color words, in a certain extent, reflects the different nationalities, regional customs and national psychology. For example:a green hat means someone is cuckolded and bearing a black pot means become a scapegoat. Color word in the "green" and "black" is not just the color category, but is established and commonly accepted as a different meaning. In addition, we can’t ignore the innovation of the color words. Recently the commonly used "self-black" which means "self-mockery" is also very "modern" language in the life. The cultural meaning of color words is necessary in Chinese teaching, because different cultural backgrounds have different meanings, although these words are not large in number, but to understand the culture of color and national psychology is significant.Color words have abundant cultural connotation, while the teaching material which served as an important bridge of spreading Chinese culture, how to release the charm of color words? Choosing the color words as the research object helps to discover the compilation loopholes and defects; to more effectively let students understand and master the color words and its rich cultural connotation.During my observation of foreign students’class, I find out that the color words in teaching Chinese as a foreign language has relatively small proportion. In addition, there are few teaching materials explaining with the cultural meanings of color words. Mostly in the advanced stage, the cultural meaning of color words would be explained and extended. The author firmly believes that, it’s too late to only explain the cultural meaning of the color’word in advanced level, because not until students reached advanced level, they have already met related cultural situation, such as buying a green hat, it indicates the customer’s lover may have an affair with others; or taking an illegal taxi when necessary. The author suggests, the cultural meaning of color words can be presented in story form, or can be treated as the complementing reading, the cultural meaning of color words are unlikely to be understood all at once. The cultural background should be taught from primary level, and constantly repeated, so that students can grasp well, and won’t confuse.To sum up, this paper takes the undergraduate course teaching Chinese as a foreign language color words as the research object, mainly analyze and classify the color words in teaching material with detailed statistics, attach great importance on cultural meanings of color words. At the same time, combining with the curriculum and the expressing demand of students, analyze the choreography of color words, as well as the rationality of distribution. And at last, the essay comes up with relevant teaching strategies and suggestions toward the color words.
