Disfluency is very common in the process of interpretation.Too much disfluency will affect the quality of interpretation and the transmission of information. Therefore, it is vital to reduce disfluency in interpretation. There are four kinds of disfluency including pause, filler, repetition, and repair. Currently researchers mainly focus on disfluency about natural language other than interpreting. Based on two cases of English to Chinese consecutive interpretation for Michelle Obama’s two speeches respectively at Peking University and Tuskegee University, the writer studies the disfluency in English to Chinese consecutive interpretation. Through analyzing the process of consecutive interpretation, the thesis finds that three causes for disfluency in English to Chinese consecutive interpretation are difficulties in listening comprehension, note-taking and interpretation outputting. Meanwhile, the thesis proposed three strategies to reduce disfluency accordingly, which are the improvement of listening comprehension ability, note-taking ability and public speaking.
