Research On The Book Design In The Republic Of China (1912-1937)

In the early 20 th century,China grew up gradually with the collision between Chinese and Western cultures.Chinese and Western compatible era style showed in every era.Especially with the influence of the Western advanced printing technology and design ideas,Chinese book design patterns has changed a lot,from the traditional ancient books in Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Printed paperback books.It has changed from tradition to modern,from unitary to multielement.During this period,the book design had great changes on color、pattern、expression and so on.It formed colorful styles and features.The Process technology and ideas on book design have improved because of the development of new publishing industry and involvement of western design ideas.The rise of the New Culture Movement in China played a part in the improment of the book design.Under this background,there were many intellectuals taking part in designing the books.They created a lot of classic works.That made a contribution to the special style of Chinese modern book design.This article tries to explore the whole face of book design in the Republic of China by introducing the background of the book design in the Repulic of China and analysing the multiple effects of Chinese and Western culture and some excellent cases.It shows our own words、illustrations、colors and patterns which are including our unique national culture and the effects of western design.The article evaluates and explores the value orientation and its spiritual intension.Thereby, it can provide valuable experience on how to express the book culture connotation better.
