A Study On The Design Method And Regeneration Path Of Chinese Traditional "Device"

The moulded gourd-shaped artifacts are gourds come after a process of carving, cutting, pyrograph and so on. It can be appreciated and played as an artwork and used as a container. The gourd is a nurture product but the moulded gourd-shaped artifacts is an artificial product. It was widely used in everyday life during the ancient time in China. It was used as container to hold water and food, as musical instruments and so on. The hometown of the author is famous for gourd products and is known as the “township of gourd art” which has a history of gourd artifacts over hundreds of years. The gourd art has a profound culture background and has all kinds of good wishes such as fortune, happiness and so on. It has been included in the world culture heritage list. With the rapid development of globalization, all kinds of material have replaced the gourd in our life and the development of gourd is very slow.This study can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, the author finished investigate and survey in Dongchangfu, Liaocheng, Shandong province. In the second stage, the author come up with several ways to created new gourd products from different perspectives such as shape, material and subject. Finally, the author come up with some suggestions on brand strategy with the study on success cases and models. Hoping the gourd-shaped artifacts will return to our everyday life with the help of modern design theory and methods and will have a promising future.
