A Study On The Group Of The Officials In The Tang Dynasty

The official retirement group plays an essential role in operating the Retirement System in Tang Dynasty, it is also the major force to maintain and improve the system. The effect of Retirement System can be reflected by three aspects, which are the types of retired officers, the results of being a retired officer as well as the life of being a retired officer. By far, the academic circles are constrained by the need of giving examples when they research the Retirement System. Moreover, the study of retired officer is also limited, because the former studies only focused on dividing the types of retirement life or exploring the consciousness of retired officer preliminarily. Therefore, to select official retirement group as the study subject is valuable, for we can further analyze the implementation and effectiveness of the Retirement System, and better understanding pluralistic living styles of Tang Dynasty. Importantly, by showing the rich lives of retired officers and revealing their fates can be meaningful to encourage the present people to embrace their elderly lives.This paper uses a broad sense to identify the official retirement group, as long as the officers applied for retirement they were included in this study. At the same time, the article discusses the specific provisions of the Retirement System in the background that ancient China was "rule by man". Based on the history books of Tang Dynasty, the paper reviewed the origins of the Retirement System and its provisions. The study will focus on the retired officers (as group), to illustrate their basic situation by using graphs, and to analyze their basic situation, types, lives and final fates.Restricted by historical conditions, the recognition of Retirement System and self-recognition of retired officers. The official retirement group showed a variety of features. First of all, the types and the results of retired officers were varied in different time range; Second, the motivation and the fate of those officers differed from man to man. What is more, when officials involved in the Retirement System, the personnel regulation and function of this system became more complex. The Retirement System either became the tools to maintain the power of rulers, or being exploited by some ministers to fulfill their interests. At the same time the diversity of official retirement group also adds elastic factors to the system, as a result the Retirement System played a significant role to maintain the ruling of Tang Dynasty. To conclude, the Retirement System do have certain effects on politics, economy, culture, as well as ideological trend during Tang Dynasty.
