The aim of the article is discussing the historical development of American public retirement pension system from 1935 to 1996 and its instruction for Chinese city retirement pension system. The article has five parts. The first part relates the background, process and significance of the establishment of American public retirement pension system in 1935. The second part discusses the cause and the content of rapid development of American public retirement pension system from 1945 to 1972. The third part discusses the cause and the content of the reform of American public retirement pension system from 1972 to 1996. The fourth part evaluates American public retirement pension system. And the fifth part discusses the instruction of the system for Chinese city retirement system.
