The European Union and the United Nations are two biggest multilateralorganizations in the world. The similarity of their guide lines and purposes makesthem naturally appeal to each other. The cooperation between the two not onlypromotes to their own interests, but also brings benefits to the development ofmultilateralism globally. The European Union plays an important role within the framework of the UnitedNations, and its member states are able to reach a common position most of the time. The European Union has significant influence as one of the most important interestgroups among the Western countries. Treaty of Lisbon established Triple-sharedPresidency which makes the Presidency the most important actor in the coordinationprocess. It is responsible for the actual work of the harmonization of the nationalposition of EU member states, it manages the EU coordination meetings byorganizing, preparing and presiding them. There is a coordination system within theEU, coordination meetings are the single most used instrument. Two main categoriesemerge: one is expert level meetings, on specific issue areas; and the other is HoMsmeetings/DPRs meetings, on the whole range of UN issues. The former is thefoundation of the coordination meetings as it accounts over half of all the meetings;and the latter is the high level meeting with the participancy of HoMs and DPRswhich focus on the important issue areas. The EU factor is also important in thecoordination process. Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations notonly operates at an EU internal level and support the work of EU in the UN, but alsohas a distinct outward orientation.Although the EU has gain tremendous progress in the internal coordination process,it still falls short at the institutional level. In practice, EU’s influence towards itsmember states is still limited, national interests still remain to be the biggest drivingforce when it comes to policy-making. There is still a long way to go for the EU in the internal corporation.
