The retirement system of China establishing in1958is still in use now a-nd the growing aging population makes it face serious challenges. But on the is-sue of whether China should raise the retirement age, there are various ideas in ac-ademic circles and it is difficult to forma common line. Supporters think that i-n the social ageing background, our government raising the retirement age is the inevitable choice to deal with the extension of life expectancy, relieve the pressu-re of pension payment, optimize the distribution of labor resources and improve t-he enterprise competence. However, the discommenders point out that raising th-e retirement age is to make China’s employment situation severe and have wide-ning inequality among individual industries, which paves the way for social confli-cts.When analyzing whether to raise the retirement age, We should pay attenti-on to the following questions. First of all, we should make distinctions betwee-n life expectancy and life clearer, unlike the latter extension, the extension of f ormer does not directly provide physiological basis for raising the retirement ag-e. Second, the pressure of pension payment results from mismanagement and in-stitutional defects of social insurance, so raising the retirement age cannot solve the problem fundamentally. At the same time, we still need to judge China’s s-ocial pension pressure accurately, given many people choose to keep working a-fter retirement and most old people live in rural areas who don’t attend societ-y endowment insurance. What’s more, because the elderly health level in China i-s not high, to raise the retirement age also cannot make full use of labor resour-ces of the aged. Lastly, our retirement system is under "double track ", in w-hich the rights and obligations of civil servants and employees are not equal, if we raise the retirement age without reform of the "double track system", Socia-1conflicts will be intensified, which is not conducive to the construction and de-velopment of harmonious society. So we suspect that China currently is not suitable for raising the retirement age. We also, of course, should be aware of that with the aggravation of aged p-opulation, raising the retirement age has become the inevitable international tre-nd. In order to reduce the impact of aging on the pension system, China should further improve the existing retirement system, unified the retirement age from d-ifferent gender, different work and different identity. At the same time, our cou-ntry should take measures to create more jobs to solve the problem facing ou-r nation today and prepare for the reform of the retirement system in advance.
