The Kuo Min Tang(KMT) fled to Taiwan in1949. In Taiwan KMT executed an authoritarian dictatorship, which led to the unenlightened politics and economic stagnation.This not only caused an upsurge in the island’s public discontent, but also called people to question the legitimacy of KMT rule in Taiwan.To alleviate the ruling crisis, the KMT had to ask the US for help, at the same time the US government in order to curb the spread of communism on a global scale, and to expand their own ideological sphere of influence, the government began to provide economic and military aid to Taiwan as a lever to put pressure on the Taiwan authorities, forcing it to give up the one-party authoritarian dictatorship in Taiwan, and take the multiparty democracy. It is under the American pulsion, Taiwan completed political transformation at first step and realized the democratization of substantial development.This paper is to study America’s role in the development of Taiwan’s democratization by analyzing the deep motivation of the US actively intervene in Taiwan, and the various impacts causing by Taiwan’s democratic reform. Content of this thesis is divided into four chapters, the first chapter is a summary of Taiwan’s democratic development, the second chapter is described the policy evolution of Taiwan’s democratization pursued by US into three stages, the third chapter is an analysis of the United States adopting what kind of specific measures to promoting the development of democracy of Taiwan, the fourth chapter is to looking into the future about US role in the development of democracy of Taiwan.The analysis of the role of US in the development of Taiwan’s democratization, is beneficial for us to understand the relations among the Taiwan straits, US-Taiwan relations and US-China relations.
