On November23,2013, China established an ADIZ over the East China Sea, andrequired foreign aircrafts in the zone to provide the corresponding identificationinformation, subject to Chinese regulatory agencies. China’s legitimate move,however, caused a lot of countries such as America, Japan, South Korea’s reaction andaccusations. They repeatedly sent military aircrafts to fly through the zone todisregard and provoke the creation of China’s ADIZ. After that, a series of militaryand psychological contests on the East China Sea ADIZ were took between the twosides.This paper focuses on the nature of differences behind the East China Sea ADIZincident between China and the United States. Chapter one explained the legal basisfor the establishment of the United States’ ADIZ on the basis of five aspects such asthe right of preventive self protection, and introduced its national practices and thecurrent rules. Chapter two made a brief introduction of the East China Sea ADIZincident on November23,2013and discussed four main differences on this incidentbetween U.S. and China. Chapter three scratched the factors affecting divergences ofconcepts and national interests on this incident from four aspects. Chapter fouranalyzed the potential impacts on the Sino-U.S. relationship from three aspects, anddiscussed the possibilities of U.S.-China future cooperation in international watersand airspace. Conclusion part pointed out that in face of Washington’s “Asian Pivot”and the two sides’ divergences on this incident, the two countries should establish along-term and effective consultation and cooperation mechanism, avoid the accidentsin international waters and airspace, in order to promote the long-term and stabledevelopment of China-U.S. relations.
