With the furthering of econom y s ystem reform in China, the cit y communit y construction als o grows so quickly. Community residents ’ participation is related with urba n community autonomy, which is an important source of communit y development. However, there are still a lot of urgent problem s in the whole process, restricting communit y participant and urban autonom y.In this paper, the researcher uses the mixed-research method, in the form of questionnaires and Semi-structured Interview, tr ying to find out the status of community involvement in Shanghai based on an empirical stud y, which includes participation subjects, objects and m anners. Meanwhile, the researcher also tries to explain it from four perspectives personal level, organization level, interest level, and policy level. The results show that now it is difficult for citizens to position themselves who are faced with the conflict of interest between individual and public. Besides, the organization fails to play a good role. But above all, the biggest problem is lacking of governmental system support.Based on the conclusions of this invest igation and overseas experience of community involvement, finally, the researcher gives four suggestions, training communit y consciousness, having a clear knowledge of rights and responsibilities, strengthening professionalization and skills, and perfectin g the communit y involvement s ystem step b y step.
