JPEG2000 is the next generation still image compression standard introduced by ISO/ITU-T (International Standard Organization/International Telecommunication Union). Being Different from JPEG, JPEG2000 is based on DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) and EBCOT (Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation) algorithm. The codestream produced by JPEG2000 can be truncated and optimized,and it also have better compression performance than JPEG.So it became a hotspot in the still image compression standards.Firstly, The JPEG2000 image coding standard was analysed and the advantages of JPEG2000 standard was pointed out in this paper. The PartI of JPEG2000 still image coding standard was analysed and the kernel coding including Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) and Bit Plane Coder(BPC) and Arithmetic Coding of JPEG2000 standard in C language was finished .In order to validate the kernel coding of JPEG in FPGA ,The hardware structure applying in image validation of JPEG2000 was detailedly designed. the schematic and PCB of the hardware were designed and at the same time the jointing and debugging of the hardware component were completed.Lastly,the board applying in FPGA hardware validation of JPEG2000 was tested.The image of the CMOS camera was captured and then stored in the external memory.The image was transformed to PC by UART interface. The Verilog HDL module of image capturing and UART was designed. The modules were simulated in Modelsim ,synthesised in Synplify and downloaded to the FPGA in QuartusII software.The implementation of JPEG2000 kernel coding in c language offered a base precondition for software and hardware co-operation implementation of JPEG2000. The image validation board offered a hardware environment for FPGA implement of JPEG2000 kernel coding. It can not only be used in JPEG2000 image coding but also in other application of multimedia data process.
