The process whereby software professional converts their knowledge into technologies and product is one that enables the development of their abilities, the realization of their personal values, the serving of the profit maximization goal of their companies and the promotion of progresses of the society. The ability of software professionals is an essential part of the core competence of a company. Along the quest toward economies of scale and internationalization, software SMEs in China need to accelerate the ability development of software professionals, which is a systematic engineering project that calls for joint actions of individuals, entities and the society.In this paper, Analysis is made on the status of software professionals' ability development among software SMEs in China in the first place, definitions of software professionals' ability and software professionals' ability development are provided. Key players and objectives of ability development are identified, and principles set forth, a software professionals' ability development framework is constructed. Through means of interview and questionnaire, driving elements in software professionals' ability and in their ability development are summarized, explained and analyzed. Weights of these elements in the competence levels and in ability development of software professionals of 3 grades: high, medium and low are calculated. The results of the statistics and analysis are examined and verified using SPSS system. A number of important conclusions are drawn on software professionals' ability development. Finally, based on the above conclusions, operable strategies proposed for ability development of software professionals of 3 grades: high, medium and low. This research not only provides a theoretical basis for HR practice in software companies, but also offers an ideal approach for software professionals to develop their abilities, enhance their job competence, plan and realize their career life targets.The construction of a sound mechanism and environment, and the adoption of effective measures for the development of software professionals' abilities prove to be significant strategies to enhance the ability of businesses, achieve sustainable development and improve social productivity.
