City is the outcome of the development of human society, economy and culture; meanwhile, it is also the embodiment and important identification of the development human civilization. City plays an extremely important role in the social, economical and cultural development of countries or regions. Resource-oriented city has, on one hand, the general character of other cities, and on the other hand, the particularity due to its natural resource. Coal-oriented cities, which are dominant in northeast resource-oriented cities, are an important component of the latter ones; and they used to make great contributions to the economic construction of our country. However, along with the development of market economy, the drawbacks of plan economy system can be gradually seen. How to transform these resource-oriented cities along the line of sustainable development is a vital subject in the field of political economics, which is, thus, also the central theme of the present paper.The first part of this paper introduces the significance of the feature of resource type industry, the position of resource-oriented city as well as its sustainable development. Coal industry shares some developmental features with other mining industries. In order to understand resource-oriented city correctly, we must begin with recognition of the developmental features of resource. Along with the exploration of natural resources, many recourse-oriented cities came into being, which have make great contributions to the strengthening of the economic power of our country.
