Gleason spiral bevel gear, which can offer many advantages of stronger bearingcapacity, higher coincidence degree, smaller vibration and lower noise, smoothertransmission and larger transmission ratio, has been widely used in automobile, heavyloads equipment, and petrochemical fields. Spiral bevel gear tooth has uniquestructure, and the profile is precise spherical involute which is manufactured by theuse of traditional design method to set a group of reasonable correction parametersand several times of checking calculation. In order to facilitate the manufacture of thegear, the back cone instead of spherical involute for gear cutting is usually chosen. This method produces the principle errors, which lead to many problems such as thetooth surface cannot be engaged, poor contact area, larger noise, and lower intensity.Due to the disadvantages of the spiral bevel gear in design and manufacture process, the main research contents and contributions are described as follows:Firstly, the formation principle of gleason spiral bevel gear is analyzed. Also, thespherical involute equation in cartesian coordinate system is deduced.Secondly, gleason spiral bevel gears are modeling accurately and parametricdesign is conducted in UG environment. Then, product assembly interferencedetection is tested and design rationality is analyzed using UG virtual assembly andmotion simulation technology. Finally, based on the NC program function in UG-CAM software, spiral bevelgear NC machining program is completed automatically. Large and small wheelsamples of spiral bevel gear are manufactured in a five-axis NC machine tool.Furthermore, the feasibility of spiral bevel gear processing technology is verified bythe detection analysis of machined gears.
