In order to solve the indisputable fact that global warming, low-carbon economycame into being. And tourism as a comprehensive economic industry, its impact onclimate and environment attracts the attention of international organizations andsocieties. The measurement of carbon emissions in tourism industry is becoming arecent new hot issue in the world’s tourism academic research. Proven regionaltourism carbon emissions and its driving factors can provide theoretical support andpractical reference for its low carbon tourism development. This paper takes the Poyang lake ecological economic zone as research object,we adopted the bottom-up approach to calculate the energy consumption and thecorresponding carbon emission of tourism industry. The carbon emission wascategorized into three sections such as transportation, accommodation and activities. Then, we used the Kaya identity and its factors’ decomposition model toquantitatively analysis the driving factors of the carbon emission arising from Poyanglake ecological economic zone’s tourism industry. The results show that the total energy consumption of tourism industry in Poyanglake ecological economic zone is44.5PJ in2012, the total tourism carbon emissionsof Poyang Lake Eco-economic zone is5.2Mt. The energy consumption shares of thetourism transportation, accommodations and activities are85.8%,8.8%and5.4%in2012, respectively. The change trend of the tourism’s carbon emission is similar to theenergy consumption. The carbon emission shares of the tourism transportation, accommodations and activities are85.6%,11.9%and2.5%in2012, respectively. Wecan find that, the tourism traffic is the major source of carbon emissions in this area.Within Poyang lake ecological economic zone, energy consumption and carbonemissions is not balanced. The region owns sound economic development and richtourism resources, can receive a lot of visitors with a high level energy consumptionand carbon emissions. Jiujiang as a key development city in the Poyang lake ecological economic zone, its energy consumption and carbon emissions are thehighest,The number reach up to8.2PJ and0.97Mt, respectively. Followed byNanchang and Jian city.Xinyu city with the lowest energy consumption and carbonemissions. The number is1.74PJ and0.2Mt, respectively.Among the factors of affecting tourism carbon emissions, traveler is the mostimportant factor for driving the increase of the tourism’s carbon emission in Poyanglake ecological economic zone. Energy intensity is the second important factor. However, the tourism economic development is a factor for blocking the increase ofthe tourism’s carbon emission. The influences of the carbon intensity are negligible. The cumulative contributes of the traveler, the tourism economic development, theenergy intensity and the other factors are71%,25%,-1.8%and5.2%, respectively. Therefore, in order to propel the low-carbon tourism development of Poyanglake ecological economic zone, we propose some countermeasures in this paper, suchas popularizing the concept of low-carbon tourism, creating a more harmonioustourism environment and enhancing the low-carbon consciousness of inhabitants. Then, we should upgrade actively the corresponding technology of energy-saving andemission reduction in the tourism industry for improving energy efficiency andreducing the energy intensity. In particular, we should pay more attention to thecarbon reduction of the tourism traffic areas, such as developing the cleaner energy toreplace the traditional transportation fuel. Finally, the government should maintainactively the direction of low carbon tourism development, make relevant laws andregulations to standardize tourism carbon emissions behavior. Only if the traveler, manufacturer and government can effort together, we would solve the question ofsaving energy and reduce carbon emissions, and pave the way for health developmentof Poyang lake ecological economic zone ’s low carbon tourism.
