The ecological footprint (EF) model has received much attention as an assessment indicator for sustainable development in recent years. The model is applied to evaluate the forest resource sustainable development ability in Shanxi Province, and to provide evidence-based practice and policy suggestion for Shanxi’s forestry construction and development. Three aspects content are included in this paper. First of all, the EF of Shanxi forest is divided into biological resources account and fossil energy account. By calculating the two kinds of account and Shanxi’s forestry ecological capability from2003-2012, Shanxi’s forestry ecological deficit/remainder is further analyzed; Then the ecological footprint model is applied to evaluate the forest resource sustainable development ability in Shanxi Province; At last, the Grey relationship analysis is applied to analyze the influencing factors that lead to ten thousands yuan GDP of Shanxi’forestry decline. The research results included the following:the EF of Shanxi forest had existed ecological deficit from2003to2012, and the situation is becoming increasingly serious. The sustainable development capability of Shanxi’s forestry is fragile, coordination coefficient of per capita has gradually declined. The ecological footprint ten thousands yuan GDP is declined, which shows that productivity and availability of ecologically productive land is improve. Fossil energy account occupies large proportion in the demand of forestry ecological footprint, and has significant influence on forestry ten thousands yuan GDP.
