The massive ecological environment problems induced by human being unreasonably exploiting the natural resource for along time have not only restricted the development of economy,but also become a threat toward the development of society and economy at present and in the future.Therefore,person began to attention to the ecological security problems.Ecological security is close to the humanity survives in the future.The regional ecological security is the promise and foundation of regional sustainable development.Therefore,the study of the regional ecological security has become the hot and important spot of the development of the ecological environment protection.Ecological footprint (EF) method which being popular recently is a new method to survey and calculate the level of human making use of the nature.The ecological footprint method was put forward by Dr.Rees,a Canadian famous eco-economist, and improved by his postgraduate,Wackernagel can analyze whether the development of a region is within ecological capacity.The pressure and the influence extent of human living activities to the nature also can be quantificationally reflected.In this Paper,based on the ecological footprint method,a local ecological footprint model based on the concept of "Sub_national hectare" was introduced.At the same time,revising and adjusting this model in a suitable way.Then the improved ecological footprint model was used to assess the sustainability of social and economic development quantitatively from 1996 to 2007 for Ankang.The change tendency of ecological footprint and ecological capacity in Ankang were analyzed for the last 12years.And a series of related indicators were used to analyze the ecological sustainable development of Ankang.The results showed that the ecological footprint was increased from 113.72million hm2 to 11.6083billion hm2,increasing10.21times in Ankang from 1996 to 2007;The change volatility of ecological capacity was small from 1996 to 2003;Ecological capacity soared to 4359774.87 hm2 in 2004,then become to decrease.However the EF increased much faster than the EC,as a result,the total ecological deficit (DF) was more and more great. Introducing six indexes:ecological pressure exponent,ecological overload exponent,the efficiency of resource use,ecological footprint diversity exponent,cumulative ecological footprint and optimum population,enriched the cover range and the compare ability of this method.The result showed that ecological pressure exponent,ecological overload exponent,cumulative ecological footprint of Ankang is increasing year by year; the eco-economical efficiency has increased from 1996 to 2004, reached the highest in 2004;Changes in the optimum population has shown a downward trend;Rapid population growth and a significant increase in the floating population, has brought a tremendous burden on the fragile ecological environment. In addition, it has compared the characteristics of ecological footprint of Ankang and Baoji.Finally,according to the characteristics of socio-economic development and resource utilization in Ankang,put forward the suggestion to alleviate pressure on ecological environment in Ankang.
