With the rapid development of economy and constant progress of science and technology, humans come to realize that development has brought a series of problems (such as energy problems, environment problems and pollution). People must face the conflict between man and nature, and seek for the harmony and sustainable development road. The sustainable development, which highlights concept of coordinated development between the environmental protection and economic development, rapidly become a hot issue for the scholars around the world since it has been proposed. Along with the deepening study analysis, how to study sustainable development in quantitative way has been the study focus and difficulty, as well as the key of achieving the sustainable development. Ecological footprint is a new method for quantitative measurement of sustainable development for it is characterized by vivid concept, rich connotation and convenient means etc.The thesis analyzes the ecological footprint scientifically and systematically. The author chooses Taiyuan as the research object, which has the salient ecological environmental problems. The author dynamically analyzes ecological footprint of Taiyuan, and does calculation and difference analysis of10(counties) cities’ecological footprint of Taiyuan. Based on the ecological footprint research, the author acts a lot of practices and explorations, and furtherly puts forward the evaluation system of the construction of regional sustainable development of Taiyuan. Moreover, feasible methods and countermeasures that may be adopted in the future development of Taiyuan are also discussed in this thesis.During2000-2009, Taiyuan’s ecological deficit changed from4.6697hm2/cap to8.9755hm2/cap, increased by1.9times. In2008, it reached maximum,8.9755hm2/cap. It was27.7times higher than the per capita capacity in2008. Taiyuan’s ecological footprint is opposite to the trend of ecological carrying capacity while is almost synchronous with the ecological deficit change trend. Therefore, although the exploitation and the use of land resources have been improved, however, due to the limited land resources and the decrease of farmland area, degeneration of grassland, destruction of forest resource and some other factors, Taiyuan Federation of ecological carrying capacity in general has a tendency to decrease. What’s worse, the human being’s increasing demanding on ecological resources causes that ecological footprint increases rapidly, and the ecological deficit increases year after year.Through the analysis, the author finds out that during2000-2009, the utilization of resources in Taiyuan had been gradually improved, GDP value pressure on ecological environment had become smaller than before. The biological resource consumption to the environment Ecological tension index (ETI) level to level5(i.e. the ecological security status is very unsafe), Ecological Footprint Index (EFI) stood for the serious non-sustainable. During2000-2005, Taiyuan’s Ecological occupancy index(EOI) was grade4, it meant that the society was relatively rich, the economic development level was relatively high; Ecological economic coordination index (EECI) was grade2, that indicated the coordination between environmental protection and economic had been raised somewhat, but the overall was still poor. In conclusion, Taiyuan took the impact on the ecological environment into consideration during rapid development of economy. The countermeasures and suggestions on the development of Taiyuan will be put forward to reduce the ecological footprint and raise resource utilization rate. The city development possibilities can be expanded from two aspects:one is the personal aspect, such as reasonable arrangements for consumption, wise selection of green product; the other is the social aspects, such as changing the energy structure, controlling population growth, improving the energy utilization rate.
