Indexable milling inserts take great part in the milling processing, because of its good performance in production efficiency, reliability and processing quality. The research on the cutting mechanism of indexable milling inserts with complex3D grooves was carried out in this paper.First, the milling inserts’mechanism was analyzed. The main cutting edge and wiper’s function was clear and definite, and so does the applications. Also the milling inserts’ structure mechanism was studied. The insert’s surface profile was accomplished by shape measuring instrument. Based on the data, we analyzed the milling inserts’ configuration characteristics.Then the failure mechanism of the milling inserts was analyzed by milling experiment. The main failure form of milling inserts was the wipers’ failure. Based on orthogonal experiment, the surface roughness model was established. By analyzing the experiment results and the wiper’s wear morphology, the factors that influence the machining accuracy were clear and definite. It can provide basis for the design of the inserts’wiper.At last, the cutting process was simulated by using Deform-3D FEM software, mainly analyzed the cutting force and temperature. The results can provide reference for the optimizing of the inserts’ structure.
