Research On Firm Growth Patterns Based On The Evolution Of Technological Capability

The sustainable growth of firm is the prerequisite for the achievement of other goals. Every firm wants to grow fast, but people often see that firms can not grow slowly or disappear from time to time. The phenomenon that firms can not grow fast is plenty. But facing at the same external market conditions, why do so many firms get rapid development? What is the reason for the fate of the two different firm? What is the determining factors for the firms' growth rate or survival?The research of the firm growth is very meaningful and valuable. Western scholars and domestic scholars studied the firm growth from multi-angles, the theory of endogenous growth studied the determinants of firm growth from the internal, which see resources and capabilities within the firm as a decisive factor in improving the growth. Technological capabilities is one of the factors which constitute firm's core competencies. In a sense, technological capabilities also determines the competitive advantage of companies, which affecting the growth rate of enterprises, According to the different growth rate of companies, usually, we can model the growth of enterprises into three pattern:sustained growth pattern, convergent growth pattern and vicious growth pattern. based on this, the paper study the different firm growth patterns from the perspective of the evolution of technological capabilities.Firstly, from the concept and theory of technological capability and firm growth pattern, we discuss the relationship between the evolution of technological capabilities and firm growth in detail, and then we propose a conceptual framework of firm growth pattern based on the rate of technological capability development; Secondly, based on the theory of technological learning and knowledge management, this paper found a mathematical model, which study the mechanism of firm growth pattern formation in the process of technological capabilities endogenous evolution; Thirdly, we analysis the concepts, characteristics and motivation of the three firm growth patterns with case studies; Subsequently, based on the theoretical analysis, we study the factors affecting the choice of different firm growth pattern, we think that the enterprise should optimize these factors from both the industry level and enterprise level to select the optimal growth pattern; Finally, this article summarizes the conclusions of this study and the prospects for future research.
