In the context of the international financial crisis and the European debt crisis, enterprise growth has become a widespread topic, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Compared with large enterprises, SMEs are at a disadvantage in terms of human resources, capital and technology, and SMEs face more difficulties and challenges. At the same time, in order to sustainable development, SMEs should attach much importance to technological innovation capability, because it’s beneficial for enterprise growth and the formation of core competitiveness. Therefore, the study of the impact of technological innovation capability on the growth of SMEs has been a hot research topic.Firstly, this paper reviews some representative literatures at home and abroad in the research field, and creates the evaluation index system of the SMEs’ growth on the basis of the literature review, including six indicators, such as ROE, CR, and QR, etc. Then, this paper uses61listed SMEs in the Shenzhen Stock Exchange of Chinese manufacturing industry in2008-2011as research sample to verify the research hypotheses. This paper conducts factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression by the statistics analysis software of SPSS17.0to explore the impact discipline and the mechanism of technological innovation capability on the growth of SMEs. Useful research conclusions are as follows:R&D intensity and R&D investment per capita both have negative effect on SMEs’ growth that year, and patent authorized amount per hundred staffs has positive effect on SMEs’ growth that year, while patent application amount per hundred staffs has no significant effect on SMEs’ growth that year; R&D intensity, R&D investment per capita, patent application amount per hundred staffs and patent authorized amount per hundred staffs all have lagged effect on SMEs’ growth. These conclusions have important theoretical and practical significance, not only for government, but also for SMEs in China. On one hand, government should make useful policies and take effective measures to create perfect environment for SMEs and support their growth. On the other hand, SMEs should attach more importance to technological innovation, which can promote enterprise growth in the long term.
