Due to Escalator products are complex system, the time consuming development cycle and high cost are needed for their development projects. The design changes are frequent owing to technical difficulty. On the other hand, frequent demand changes for satisfying all the customers make it difficult to define the scope of the projects. Poor scope management usually brings the progress delay and cost increases. To avoid these, Rational scope definition, risk assessment and effective control of the changes in the prior period of project are effective methods.In this thesis, the opportunities are found for the improvement in various stages of scope management from the study of Escalator development projects in Otis Company. Firstly, this thesis studies how to strength the scope planning and how to define the scope completely in the planning phase of Escalator development project. The WBS matrix which combines the product assembly structure and project process is introduced to the scope definition. Secondly, indentify the risk of scope change by the new method that integrated the WBS matrix and DSM into composite matrix. After that, apply the tool RAMP, which is from Otis, to assess the risk. Finally, the thesis studies how to control the scope changes and how to validate the verification in the Escalator development project.Through the above study, some references are hoped to be given for scope management of Escalators development projects.
