On the background of energy and environment crisis, the application of solar energy has a bright future and the photovoltaic industry which tries to achieve utilizing solar energy grows up rapidly. Photovoltaic industry is an emerging, new and high technology and capital-intensive industry. China's photovoltaic industry has been developing very quickly since 21 century. The output of solar cell in China accounted for one third of the world's total output in 2008. However, the domestic photovoltaic market is very small, so it depends heavily on overseas market. And the technology deficiency of the central link in the chain of photovoltaic industry has been the vital factor hampering the healthy development of the industry in our country. The current research on photovoltaic industry is mainly concentrated on technology, whereas studies on the whole industry are quite few. This thesis aims to analyze the whole photovoltaic industry from the perspective of its industry competitiveness and it will give an overall evaluation of the competitiveness of China's photovoltaic industry so as to provide references for China's photovoltaic industry to move past the difficulties in its industrial development and achieve its healthy development. In this thesis, a large number of charts and data are used to analyze the overall situation of PV industry from the market and technology point, describing major solar PV industry policy supports for national status and market in Germany, the United States, Japan and Spain in details. It gives a profound analysis of the current situation and problems of China's photovoltaic industry on the basis of six elements of the"diamond model". For the special situation of China's photovoltaic industry, this thesis emphasizes on analyzing the restraining factors which affects the competitiveness of photovoltaic industry. These two key factors are the related supporting industries and the government. Then it builds a model to research photovoltaic industry on the basis of Analytic Hierarchy Process. This thesis selects three first-level indexes which represent the industry itself, external circumstances and policies separately. These indexes are subdivided in seven second-level indexes. By comparing the importance of various indexes, the weight of each index is determined and the evaluation values is obtained by calculating after being standardized. The competitiveness situation of the PV industry is divided into three levels, the calculated score shows China's photovoltaic industry is less competitive and it is still in the level which needs vigorously supporting. Finally the thesis gives some suggestions on policy proposals for reference with a view to the healthy development of photovoltaic industry.
