Regarding research into core competence, many foreign and domestic studies have been restricted to the core competence of enterprises. This theory should also be applied to the research and development of tourism in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture (hereafter known as"Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture"), thereby promoting the development of tourism in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture and giving it a unique competitive advantage. Presently the correlation research has not been seen at home or abroad as this is still a very new topic.Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture's tourism resources are of many types, are of a high quality, are unique, the distribution of lands and mountains are reasonable, and the natural and cultural landscapes compatibly merge into one organic whole. Therefore, the emerging local tourist industry is gradually becoming a burgeoning national economic mainstay industry. Yet for many reasons tourism in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture has still not attained its full potential. It has not attained superiority amidst competition in the tourism industry and has not unfolded the unique charm of Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture.The thesis will first introduce core competence and the basic concepts of core competence as applied to tourism. By synthesizing the foundational studies of predecessors, a model of the essential factors of core competence can be constructed. The important factors constituting tourism core competence are: factors of production, demand for travel, the tourism environment, and tourism management and decision power. With this foundation, the thesis will evaluate the tourism resources in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture, as well as analyze the current state of tourism development. The thesis conclude that the competitive power of Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture's tourism market is strong, and there is a large potential for developing tourism. Apply the factor model of tourism core competence to carry out an evaluation and analysis of tourism core competence in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture.Point out that the core elements of tourism in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture are highly competitive and there is still room for improvement, but the ability to utilize resources is weak. Therefore, Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture should utilize the factors of production, create a demand for tourism, improve the tourism environment, and focus on tourism management and decision power. These four aspects cultivate and promote tourism core competence which will impel the quick and healthy development of tourism in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture.
